FCT demolishes prostitutes’ settlement

The Department of Development Control of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council on Thursday demolished illegal structures allegedly inhabited by commercial sex workers located off the popular Gimbiya Street, Area II, Abuja.
The structures built with woods and numbering 42 were pulled down by a caterpillar and set ablaze by officials even as the prostitutes hurried to salvage their belongings.
Assistant Director, Enforcement and Monitoring, Nathaniel Atebije, who led the operation, said the ladies of easy virtue were warned earlier to remove the illegal structures.
He said the settlement was discovered by development control officials, adding that the FCT Administration would not allow illegal communities to be set up for security reasons.
“We had earlier cautioned the inhabitants of the settlement who are prostitutes to vacate the area, but they were adamant. We found people of questionable characters in the shanty village and we have to demolish the place as it constitute an eye sore to this area,” Atebije stated.
Meanwhile, the FCT Administration said it had constructed and completed three Police Stations and 11 Police Posts in Life-Camp, Jabi, Wuye, Utako, Wuse Zone 4, Maitama, Wuse Zone 7, Garki II, Garki Area 3, Daki-Biyu and Garki Area 10.
