The movie opened in 2,565 theaters at midnight last night, and it’s already shattering records. It opened with $19.75 million, making it the all-time highest grossing non-sequel in history. It’s also now the seventh biggest midnight debut of all time.
In total, The Hunger Games is expected to rake in as much as $125 million of the weekend.
Lionsgate spent approximately $80 million on making the movie, which centers on a group of kids who are chosen to participate in a televised battle to the death. Think Toddlers & Tiaras, only interesting.
The Hunger Games will now expand to 4,137 locations. If it reaches the $125 million mark, it will be the biggest March debut of all time, even more than Alice in Wonderland. Alice in Wonderland opened to more than $116 million in 2010.
