A Boko Haram bomb factory in kano
According to the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Idris, the explosives suspected to Tetro Nitro Toluent, TNT, concealed in three white sacks were abandoned by unknown persons at Rijiyar Zaki.
The police boss said experts described the substance as very dangerous and capable of causing great damage if put to use.
This development has, however, given credence to the renewed fear of possible fresh attack on the troubled ancient city which has come under attack by the dreaded Islamic militants, the Boko Haram.
Since 20 January when the sect launched its worst and most coordinated attack, killing over 200 people, they have carried out several attacks, with many foiled by security agencies.
Briefing newsmen in his office today, Idris also frowned at a statement credited to Hisbah authorities that the Sharia’ah security outfit handles 75 per cent of police-related cases.
The state police boss who made reference to a publication by a national daily quoting the Hisbah Commander-General, Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa as stating that Hisbah is handling 75 per cent of police cases warned the Islamic organisation to retract such statement and face its civil duties of waging war against alcoholism, prostitution and failed marriages.
“Hisbah’s duty is civil and religious in nature. There is no way Hisbah or any other organization can handle criminal cases. It is unconstitutional and unacceptable. In as much as we partner with individuals and organizations to combat crime, it is irresponsible for any organization to usurp the duties of the police.
“As provided by section 214 of the constitution, ‘there shall be Police Force for Nigeria which shall be known as the Nigeria Police Force, and subject to the provision of this constitution, no other Police Force shall be established for the Federation or any part thereof.’
“In view of the above, it is pertinent to note without any compromise that the Hisbah cannot take the duties of the Police Force at any time,” said Idris.
He also said 13 suspects are in the Command’s custody for offences ranging from armed robbery, impersonation, mischief and possession of currency suspected to be counterfeit.
Exhibits recovered from the armed robbers include four AK47 rifles, 8 magazines, 328 live ammunition, 1 live GPMP ammunition and locally made pistols.
He said 7 stolen vehicles, 15 rolls of cable, 2 unregistered KASEA motorcycles and N137,070.00k were among items recovered from the suspects, adding that all the arrest and recovery of the stolen items took place within two weeks.
Idris also revealed that among suspects in their custody awaiting prosecution is 27-year old Abdulateef Shehu who sexually assaulted a 12-year old girl (name withheld) in a primary school located in Karkasara in the state capital.
