THE police in Enugu State said one Lawrence Odum, alleged to have played a key role as a gang leader and mastermind of the bullion van armed robbery incident at Nsukka in Enugu State last year in which N68 million was carted away, has been arrested.
Two policemen were reportedly killed while several other persons sustained bullet wounds on account of the robbery incident which occurred along Nsukka – Opi Road on August 22, 2011. No fewer than seven members of the gang were also killed in the incident.
The state police public relations officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, disclosed in Enugu, yesterday, that the “gang leader” was apprehended in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by the command’s security operatives.
”The suspect was picked up by security operatives from Enugu State Police command in Port Harcourt, Rivers State at a new generation bank where he had gone to cash money which, unknown to him, was tagged and put on his trail through e-tracking, a device to track suspects anywhere.
”This was however successfully executed through financial institution documents which he (the suspect) left behind unknowingly when he hurriedly packed out from his house following his escape from the scene of the bullion van robbery incident after a heavy shoot out between himself, his gang and security operatives. The document was recovered from the suspect’s room during investigation,” the police spokesman said.
The police said security operatives from the command had been on his trail after the bullion van robbery following a tip off that he was a Port Harcourt based armed robbery kingpin.
Amaraizu said the suspect was already helping the detectives in their investigations, adding that “he has narrated his alleged role on that fateful day.”
No fewer than seven members of the robbery gang were killed in a shootout with the police patrol teams that pursued them from Nsukka to Ikem, Isiuzo Local Government.
The police recovered part of the money stolen from the bullion van as well as a General Purpose Machine Gun but the gang leader reportedly escaped since then.
In a related development, two suspected cable vandals have been arrested and detained by the police in Enugu.
