The Nigerian military Joint Task Force (JTF) has claimed that it killed a senior commander of the Boko Haram Islamic sect in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The JTF spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa made the claim in a statement released in Maiduguri.
“Following a tip-off, a special operation was conducted on Tuesday in Maiduguri, which led to the arrest of a notorious commander of Boko Haram who was involved in recent attacks in Maiduguri,” Colonel Musa stated. The statement disclosed that the Boko Haram top shot “was arrested with his gang members in Jajeri area of the city.''

Colonel Musa added that the militant group’s commander and his gang attempted to escape shortly as they were being moved to a detention facility for questioning. “Our men had no choice but to shoot them and they bleed to death before they were taken to the hospital,” said the JTF statement.
The Nigerian troops reportedly recovered one pump-action gun, two bows and arrows, three machetes and a handset. The JTF also said its officers responded to a distress call and engaged a group of suspected armed bandits who robbed some houses in Kachalari, Maiduguri, in a shootout. Two suspected bandits died in the exchange of gunfire. “Three locally-made pistols, 15 rounds of assorted ammunition, four machetes and a handset were recovered,” said the JTF.
As at the time of filing this report, the Boko Haram sect had not reacted to the claims by the JTF.
