STATE of EMERGENCY: FG suspends allocation to five Plateau LGAs

Jos — Activities have been virtually paralyzed in the four local government areas of Plateau State where President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency last January as their monthly allocations have been suspended by the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee.
Vanguard gathered that the councils were denied their allocations during the last Joint Allocation Committee meeting where they were told that their allocations were being withheld because of the declaration. The local government areas are Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi and Riyom.
It was learnt that the development has made it impossible for them to pay staff salary or meet other financial obligations, thereby, virtually crippling their activities.
The Plateau State House of Assembly has, meanwhile, waded into the matter, expressing dismay at the turn of events and urging the Federal Government to clarify the status of the local governments in relation to the state of emergency.
Speaker of the House, Mr John Dabwang, while presenting the position of the House after deliberating the matter, Tuesday, said the clarification was necessary because the new development had brought a lot of hardship on the councils and their staff.
The Majority Leader, Gyang Fulani had told the House that the local government areas sent representatives to the monthly Joint Allocation Committee meeting where they were told that allocation to them had been suspended because of the state of emergency.
The House resolved to liaise with members of the National Assembly from the state to clarify the status of the affected local government areas in the law backing the declaration of the state of emergency.
