OWERRI—A Divisional Police Officer, DPO, and some of his subordinates are now facing serious interrogation at the Imo State Police Command Headquarters over their alleged involvement in tampering with monies recovered from fleeing kidnappers.
While one account claimed that the money involved is N3.5 million, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Samuel Oodee, told Vanguard that the police officers said they recovered only N380,000.
He said: “For now, two junior rank police officers are in detention and are facing interrogation over the matter. I must also tell you nothing for now has been linked to the DPO but he will eventually be quizzed if anything is linked to him.”
According to Oodee, the command has only restricted the movement of the two policemen, while serious investigation is continuing.
The PPRO said: “The command cannot pre-empt the outcome of the investigation. The policemen on ground declared a figure but a different amount was allegedly recovered.”
Vanguard recalls that a kidnap victim, identified as a businessman resident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, successfully escaped from his captors’ den at Mbaitoli/Ikeduru axis.
It was also gathered that the kidnappers decided to relocate their den to Oguta area, but along the route, the hoodlums met an unsuspecting army patrol vehicle.
“The hoodlums first opened fire on the patrol van and the soldiers returned fire but the criminals managed to escape and later dumped the badly perforated car in the kidnap kingpin’s home at Oguta,” a villager told Vanguard.
The villager said as soon as the vigilante group sighted the vehicle at Oguta, they quickly alerted the police division, which swung into action.
