The
report of police investigation and draft charges against a House of
Representatives member, Farouk Lawan, for allegedly receiving $620,000
bribe from an oil magnate, Femi Otedola, are with the Attorney-General
of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, we has learnt.
Investigations by our correspondents in
Abuja on Thursday indicated that the police had sent the case file to
Adoke since August 2012 along with charges drafted by the police, which
were expected to be modified and then preferred against Lawan in court.
A source said, “The police sent the case
file to Adoke since last year, so it is no longer under our purview
because we have concluded investigations and it is up to the ministry of
justice to take the next step by arraigning Lawan.”
The ranks of people calling for Lawan’s
prosecution for corruption have swelled in recent days with two activist
lawyers, Femi Falana and Festus Keyamo, calling for his immediate
prosecution.
Deputy Force Public Relations Officer,
Frank Mba, however, said the police had done what was required of the
force in the matter, adding that the force had nothing more to add.
“We have done what is required of us,
that is the only thing I can say,” he said. Efforts to get the AGF to
react to the development were not successful.
Calls to his mobile telephone could not go through, and an SMS sent to him was not replied.
Also, officials in the Federal Ministry
of Justice could not shed new light on the report that the case file had
been submitted to the AGF since August 2012.
The Chief Press Secretary in the Ministry
of Justice, Mr. Ambrose Momoh, told one of our correspondents that
Adoke was in the best position to comment on the issue, although he
added that the AGF was not in town.
