Boko Haram bomb attack in Borno
A prison has been broken into in the lowly town of Kumshe, in Borno
State by gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect, killing
two prison wardens and setting free inmates.
It was gathered that the gunmen initially attacked a police station in
Banki, the Nigerian border town with Cameroon but were repelled by the
policemen on duty.
An eyewitness who spoke to journalists from Banki, a town in Bama Local
Government Area of Borno, one of the places where the state of
emergency was declared by President Goodluck Jonathan over four months
ago, said the gunmen attacked the border town at about 11am on Thursday.
“Sporadic gunshots where heard in the exchange of fire between them and the police, and this went on for about 20 minutes.”
He said when it dawn on the gunmen that they could not penetrate the
police station, they took leave but they later regrouped and attacked
the prison in Kumshe, about 40 kilometres away but within the same Bama
Local Government.
Speaking on the attack on the prison, a police source said the gunmen came fully armed with explosives and sophisticated guns.
According to him, they went straight for the prison and after gunning
down two prison wardens, the other officials took to their heels and the
gunmen set the prisoners free.
Spokesman of the Police in Borno State, Samuel Tizhe confirmed the incident.
He disclosed that the Police have “so far arrested 23 persons in connection with the attacks.”
