Gunmen kill Lt. Col, six other security men

Yenagoa – Four policemen and three military personnel among them a Lieutenant Colonel were yesterday, killed by unidentified gunmen along the waterways of Nembe and Brass local government council areas of Bayelsa State. While four policemen were reportedly killed at the Marine Police Checkpoint in the Nembe Creek at about 7am, the attack on the lieutenant colonel and the two Naval ratings occurred at the Okpoama River junction at about 10am on their way to Ogbia waterside.
Militants in action
Eyewitnesses said the police and military personnel were ambushed by the yet to be identified gunmen suspected to be pirates in separate attacks.
The gunmen were said to have approached the marine police checkpoint and the two speedboats conveying the military personnel in two speed boats and opened fire on them.
Although the police authorities confirmed that four of their men were killed by unidentified gunmen around the Nembe creek, a source from the area told Vanguard that the death toll could be more as the policemen were caught off guard by the gunmen who shot them at close range.
The state Commissioner of Police, Chris Olakpe, who was thrown into mourning, could not speak with newsmen on the incident, but the Command Spokesman, Mr. Emokpae Eguavoen (ASP) confirmed the incident.
He said four corpses from the attacked team of Marine Policemen have so far been recovered.
On the killing of the military men, the State Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union, Comrade Lloyd Sese and a government source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident and said it occurred at about 10am yesterday.
The government source said, “only one military officer and two Naval ratings were attacked with other passengers in a boat at Okpoama junction of the Brass-Ogbia route of the river. We can not confirm if they were killed.”
In his reaction, the Media Coordinator of the Joint Task Force, Lt. Col. Timothy Antigha said although the JTF is waiting for a full report on the attack, it remained “unconfirmed”.
“There are unconfirmed reports of an armed attack on military personnel by yet to be identified gunmen. The attack reportedly took place at about 10 am this morning(yesterday, while the personnel were enroute Ogbia from Brass. Details are still sketchy for now. New development will be communicated in due course,” Lt Col Antigha said.
The attack on the police and military personnel came on the heels of the multiple dynamite attacks allegedly launched by some youths on some spots along the Opolo and Biogbolo areas of the state on the same stretch of road with the headquarters of the Joint Task Force.
But the state government dismissed the alleged dynamite attacks, in a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Daniel Iworiso-Markson, saying that the reported dynamite explosion was not correct.
He said, “the story is not only malicious but an outright falsehood. The fact is that there was no explosion. What was misconstrued as explosion were mere knock-outs thrown around the streets by merry-making youths and Okada-riders who were celebrating the defeat of the English national team by their Dutch counterpart in an international friendly match.”
According to him: “It, therefore, beats the imagination of government that an innocuous act of our youths was hyped to mean bomb explosion by enemies of Bayelsa State. It is clear that the motive of the mischief was to cause fear in the minds of Bayelsans and create a negative perception in the minds of prospective investors that Bayelsa State is unsafe for investments and tourism.
“Government wishes to assure Bayelsans and all investors that no amount of propaganda and mischief by enemies of progress will distract the administration of Governor Henry Seriake Dickson from delivering on his restoration agenda to the good people of Bayelsa State and Ijaw nation.
“Government therefore calls on Bayelsans to ignore the explosion falsehood and go about their lawful businesses without any fear of molestation as government has put in place security measures to secure lives and property across the state. Governor Dickson and the various security outfits like the JTF, police and State Security Service are working assiduously to ensure that Bayelsa State is at peace”, he said.

EFCC arraigns Lagos Speaker, aide for money laundering

Ikuforiji
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arraigned the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, before a Federal High Court in Lagos for money laundering.
Also arraigned in the court presided over by Justice Okechukwu Okeke on Thusday was the Speaker’s Personal Assistant, Oyebode Atoyebi.
The accused were charged with amended 20 counts of money laundering.
The EFCC alleged that between April 2010 and July 2011, the accused conspired to illegally accept various cash payments of N510m from the House of Assembly without going through a financial institution.
The arraignment before Justice Okeke followed the transfer of the case by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, from Justice John Tsoho, who earlier disqualified himself from the case.
EFCC’s counsel, Godwin Obla, had earlier sought that the charge should be read to the defendants.
The defence counsel, Tayo Oyetibo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, did not object to the reading of the charge to his clients.
The accused, who pleaded not guilty to all the counts, were granted bail shortly after taking their plea.
The Speaker was granted bail on personal recognition. However, Justice Okeke demanded that the Clerk of the state House of Assembly, Segun Habiru, should stand as surety for Atoyebi’s bail.
Though Obla did not oppose the accused persons’ bail application, he had, however, urged the court to reject Oyetibo’s demand that their bail be hinged on personal recognition.
Justice Okeke adjourned the matter till March 26 and 27 for trial.
The EFCC said the accused persons’ offence contravened sections 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 and punishable under Sections 16 (2) (b) of the same Act.

OJUKWU: Jonathan, Soyinka, Rawlings, Anyaoku, others pay final respect

ENUGU— PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan, Thursday, acknowledged contributions of the late former Biafran warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu towards the unity of the country, describing him as “a rare patriot and humanist.”
The president, who was represented by Vice President Namadi Sambo, at the national inter-denominational funeral rites and lying-in-state for Ojukwu at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, said he had no hesitation in describing the Ikemba Nnewi as a rare patriot because his life epitomized enduring love for his country.
Ojukwu was rare patriot  —Jonathan
“Ojukwu was indeed a rare patriot because his life epitomized enduring love for the country he belonged to and a special place of Nigeria, a relentless critical love. Critical, because he wanted to be the best he could be, a civil, just, prosperous and a united nation where no one is oppressed and a rare humanist because his love for humanity was particularly defined by self sacrifice,” President Jonathan said in a special tribute in honour of the late Igbo icon.
According to him, Ojukwu’s contribution in the nation’s political sphere cannot be overlooked, stressing that after his ordeal, he (Ojukwu) continued to play a major role in the advancement of the Igbo nation in a democracy.
LAST RESPECT—Vice President Namadi Sambo laying a Wreath as he pays last respect during the National Funeral Ceremony of Late Dim Chukwuemeka Odunmegwu Ojukwu, yesterday, in Enugu State. Photo: Hill Ezeugwu.
“Ojukwu has played significant role in Nigeria’s return to democracy since  the Fourth Republic began in 1999. He has contested as the presidential candidate of his party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, for the last three elections and until his illness he remained the party leader, the party that was in control of two states and largely influential among the Igbo ethnic area of Nigeria.
The president said he was committed to ensuring that all the wounds of the past were healed completely and that “we do not ignore the lessons of the past as we strive to build a great nation that justifies the labour of our past heroes, Ojukwu inclusive.”
Jonathan said the achievements that set Ojukwu apart and which had made him subject of “edifying posthumous commentaries,” though undeniably solid, were far from personal.
He said: “They were solid altruistic achievements of a man whose life epitomized love and self sacrifice.  For only such love could explain  his preference for the great risk involved in the leadership role he assumed in his lifetime to the privileged background into which he was born.”

Recalling how Ojukwu sailed to leadership limelight and how “he reluctantly accepted the role that perhaps most critically defined his place in the history of our country,” the president also noted how the late Biafran leader, “despite his reluctances, acquitted himself quite historically, heroically while fulfilling that role not withstanding the difficult odds that stood against his side” during the civil war.
He loved Nigeria so much —Gowon
In his tribute, former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, said Dim Ojukwu would ever be remembered for “his courage, focus, boldness and unwavering desire to fight for justice, equity and fair play for his people.”
Gowon whose tribute was delivered by Prof. Benjamin Marere, Coordinator of Nigeria Prays, said: “Dim Ojukwu loved Nigeria so much, he merely wanted to opt out over perceived injustice to his people.”
Praying that God grant Ojukwu’s soul eternal rest, Gowon promised to pay a special visit to the bereaved family when he returns from his trip to the United States.
His exit, a huge void — Anyaoku
In his tribute, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, said news of the death of Ojukwu struck him not just on account that his exit means a huge void  in the lives of many Nigerians he touched, but also because he was a personal friend.
“All his entire life, Emeka Ojukwu was devoted to the pursuit of excellence in whatever he engaged himself. He was a witty administrator, a consummate soldier, an astute politician and unmistakable patriot. He was also a dignified epitome of stoicism, having endured his years in exile with complete equanimity and resilience that saw him excelling in his family’s tradition of hard work and industry,” he said.
Ojukwu stood for unity —Rawlings
Reflecting on the life of Ojukwu and the Nigerian civil war, former Ghanaian president, Mr John Jerry Rawlings, who led an official delegation from Ghana to the funeral rites, said the late Biafran leader was a man who stood for equity, peace and justice.
Rawlings said Nigeria today still faced serious challenges and as the entire nation broods over the unity and political future of the country, the citizens should take a cue from the greatest examples of “General Ojukwu who in the midst of adverse circumstances chose using reconciliation as a first option.”
The former Ghanaian leader who was guest speaker at the night of tributes held at the Enugu Sports Club, however, explained that Ojukwu did not hesitate to defend his people militarily in pursuit of the ideals of equity, peace and justice. He stressed that the circumstances that led to Biafra and the subsequent civil war were very disturbing.
The ex-Ghanaian leader said some of the events that caused the Biafra war have similarities to today’s socio-economic disparities in Nigeria, emphasising that it was only when Nigerians appreciated the “sacrifices persons like Ojukwu and General Yakubu Gowon had to make in securing peace and unity that they would put in place a proper conciliatory posture for Nigeria.”
He noted that while Gowon fought on one side of the war to save Nigeria’s unity, Ojukwu fought on the other side to protect his people.
…Soyinka too
Nobel Laurite, Prof. Wole Soyinka also showered praises on the late Ikemba Nnewi whom he described as his childhood friend and urged Nigerians particularly Ndigbo to emulate his leadership qualities.
He stated that Nigeria’s history would not be complete without the role of Ojukwu, saying rather than mourning his exit, Nigerians should celebrate the fact that in his life, bitterness gave way to reconciliation.
Fall of a great iroko tree —Gov. Obi
Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum and Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, thanked the Federal Government for according due respect to Ojukwu and likened the demise of Ojukwu to the “falling of a great iroko tree.”
He urged Ndigbo to continue with Ojukwu’s fight for “justice, peace and love for Nigeria,” adding that the death of the Ikemba Nnewi should be seen as an opportunity to unite the Igbo so that they collectively agitate for whatever is their right.
A rare enigma —Chime
In his tribute, Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State said: “This great hero lying before us today, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, is one of those rare enigmas, the discussion of which can never be exhausted or caused to expire. The story of his life is actually a huge collection of stories. It is a massive montage and kaleidoscope of dramatic and historic events.
“Larger than life while alive and even more so, in death, Ojukwu is at once, a historical and iconic personage, an enigma and myth who bestrode his times like a colossus, and who responded to all emergent circumstances in his environment with typical candour and valour.”
The lying-in-state which was turned to carnival of sort by a huge crowd of people from all parts of the South East and beyond, was attended by who is who in Nigeria.

How Boko Haram escapee Kabiru Sokoto was re-arrested

Kabiru Sokoto, the Boko Haram strategist  who cost the immediate past Inspector General of Police and six of his lieutenants their jobs and put the nation on edge, was re-arrested yesterday hiding behind a rack of drying clothes.
He was caught with his elder brother in a hut at Mutum Biu village in Taraba State.
He had been on the run for 25 days after escaping from a team of policemen who had taken him to  Abaji, near Abuja, for a search of his residence.
The policemen were attacked by some youths who freed Kabiru.
The policemen and the Assistant  Commissioner of Police, Zakari Biu, investigating the suspect are now under probe over the escape.
The immediate past IGP, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, six of his lieutenants were sacked on account of Kabir Sokoto’s escape.
He is believed to be the  mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Madalla.
Kabiru and his  elder brother, in whose company he was arrested, were flown to Abuja at about 1pm yesterday from Jalingo in  an Air Force Plane.
The SSS immediately briefed the presidency and other security agencies accordingly. The Nation yesterday reported that Kabiru Sokoto had not fled the country contrary to speculations and that the SSS and military intelligence were hopeful that he would be arrested soon.
It was gathered that the suspect was picked up from his hide-out between 5am and 6am.
The SSS had to intervene in the hunt for the suspect following the inability of the Nigeria Police to re-arrest him.
The source said: “After trailing him for about three weeks, we succeeded in re-arresting him at Mutum Biu village on Friday along Wukari-Jalingo Highway.
“During the dawn raid, Kabiru Sokoto sandwiched himself in the clothes rack within the compound to evade arrest but our vigilant operatives located him. He was re-arrested with his elder brother.
“The SSS team took time to ascertain that it was Kabiru Sokoto that was really re-arrested. Apart from his photograph and finger prints, a few security searches were also conducted. Thereafter, the SSS broke the news.
“From the village, he was taken to Jalingo where the Air Force flew him and his elder brother to Abuja in a special flight. We are suspecting that his elder brother had been shielding him or might have been his guide in the escape bid.
“A team has been raised to interrogate both of them.
“Following SSS intervention, the suspect was initially located at Toto Village in Nasarawa State where he was constantly in touch with the detained spokesman of Boko Haram, Abu Qaqa.
“He got to Toto from Abaji where he escaped from a police team that went to search his house. Throughout his stay in Toto, the call logs revealed how he strategised with the Boko Haram spokesman.
“We suspect that he became frustrated and opted to relocate to Taraba from Nasarawa following the arrest of Abu Qaqa.
“But security agencies were careful in invading Toto to avoid unnecessary loss of lives. Yet ,  Sokoto seized the opportunity to disguise with his elder brother, and relocated to Taraba State .

25 parties withdraw from poll, endorse Dickson

Seriake Dickson
At least 25 out of the 35 political parties registered for Saturday’s governorship election in Bayelsa State have withdrawn from the race.
They subsequently declared their support for the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Seriake Dickson.
The development came barely 12 hours to the election.
The candidates of the parties, in a statement they signed and made available to our correspondent in Yenagoa, said they took the decision in the interest of security, unity and peace of the state.
They said that after carefully weighing the prospect of unity in the state, they resolved to enter into an accord with Dickson and to rally support for him.
“We hereby endorse Dickson, the candidate of the PDP and direct our teeming and faithful supporters to vote massively for Dickson in the governorship election on Saturday.
“We have made this resolution in the interest of peace, progress and the development of the state having assessed the PDP governorship candidate (Henry Seriake Dickson) as credible and trustworthy to restore the lost glory of Bayelsa State and fast-track development to our land and people,” they said.

The true colours of Obasanjo and Babangida

Our two warring Generals, adept at quoting The Bible and The Quran to  justify acts of  mischief have now publicly admitted in their own words, who they truly are- deceitfully devious  scheming political  fraudsters.  And since they know each other perfectly more than the rest of us, I think their characterisation of themselves as trickster at seventy or fraudster of indeterminate age was quite apt.  Both of them started devious scheming as young military officers and today, they are still engaged in fraudulent game of deceit in and out of power. The only point of disagreement between the duo, it will appear, was who is more decent or honourable. And the answer to that will depend on the yardstick we use. After all, as they say, there is honour even among thieves.
Both have furtively strived to portray themselves as  Nigerian patriots, heroes  of war and peace, selfless leaders who  fought a civil war to keep Nigeria one. Little did we realise it was more for their gains rather than their patriotism. As their trophy, they jointly held our nation to ransom for about twenty years of our fifty years of independence. Like the crafty men they claimed they are, they talk too much like tricksters and quick to anger like conmen. They both took calculated risks and were Machiavellian in their strategies for managing state affairs, often eliminating not just their enemies but also those who crown them. Banbangida is flustered that Obasanjo whom he moved from prison to palace paid him back in bad coin. It is as if we have forgotten the fate that befell General Mamman Vatsa and MKO Abiola.
General Babangida is far from being idiotic. All available evidence supports his charcaterisation as clever, cunning and crafty.  A man who described himself as ‘an evil genius’ and has like his hero,  Chaka the Zulu who killed for fun, demonstrated  high degree of courage  when faced with threat of  survival  even from bosom friends. He can at best be described as a slippery customer. A man described by, MKO Abiola as; “with Banbangida as a friend, one doesn’t need an enemy.’ Babangida is only a shade different from Obasanjo’s characterisation of him as   a crafty snake. Idiots don’t plan successful coup except you are a drunken Dimka. But Babangida is a veteran of many coup d etats capping them with the annulment of the presidential mandate of MKO Abiola, his bosom friend and business partner.  It is only a corn artist that can topple a regime on the basis of government bad policies only to use the same awful policies to govern for eight years.
On the economic front, Babangida has taken credit for reengineering Nigeria through his Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP).  He introduced National Directorate of employment, NERFUND, Peoples Bank DIFFRI, Etc, ostensibly to ameliorate the pains of SAP. But it is on record that the efforts made many of his friends’ bank owners and many Generals, multi millionaires.
On the political front, Banbangida embarked on  an ambitious  N40 billion political transition programme with two  ‘decreed’ political parties, building of political party head quarters across  the nation and grooming and indoctrination of his ‘new breed’ politicians  with the cliché of not having any link with the past. He successfully hoodwinked the political elite. He banned, unbanned and finally banned them from contesting election to leave the political space for his new breed politicians that have been pillaging our nation since 1999. He duped the intellectual elites of their only priced possession, their integrity. Many became “Aso Rock ‘professors,   shamelessly among others authoring his autobiography ‘The Prince of the Niger.’
Of course, Babangida’s characterization of his former commander is equally fitting except for his reference to Obasanjo as ‘wittiness comedian’. Obasnajo like Babangida may be very deceitful, but he is not without wits.  Indeed, he is a journalist and any cartoonist’s favourite on account of his special gift as a stand-up comedian. General Obasanjo voluntarily relinquished power in 1979. He was begged and cajoled by self proclaiming patriots like Babangda to come and clear the mess he and Abacha left behind, even while protesting he had not forgotten anything in Aso rock presidential lodge. But since he ended up rooting for a third term agenda after eight years in power, Obasanjo is closer to the picture of a crafty fraudster that Babangida painted.
But the   more I search the less difference I see between Generals Obasanjo and Babangida. The only thing that separates them is their ambition of a life presidency. IBB calls himself the evil genius, those who know OBJ say he, like Babangida swims in alleged iniquity.  Both leaders suffer from selective perception. Most of their actions stem from the blurred pictures in their heads. Both have never been humble or charitable enough to accept others also have some of the virtues they think they and they alone have in abundance.  Both had their roots questioned by political adversaries.  For instance, Obasanjo’s political enemies claim he is not Yoruba. Much as he insists, his political foes maintain he has his roots in Onitsha. As for the other, his political enemies also insist he had his roots in Ogbomosho. They insisted he was called Gbadamosi by NTA shortly after his palace coup in 1985.
They both claimed to know what is best for Nigeria without asking Nigerians. In this regard, one insisted there was no alternative to SAP, the other insisted there was no alternative to privatization. Both programmes merely transferred our national patrimony to a few of their cronies and family members
Both often display public piety. One insisted on listening to God’s voice instead of advisers before taking decisions despite God’s admonition that the ‘voice of man is the voice of God’. The other publicly displays the tesbhr (the Muslim rosary) for everyone to see how pious he is. On the night he was to defend the annulment of the most credible election in the nation’s history, conspicuously displayed in his hand was the rosary while every statement was laden with ‘Isha Allah’. What is also not lost on Nigerians, was the   parallel between the self perpetuation motivated annulment and a failed third term agenda scheming which motivated the massive rigging of the 2007 presidential election that installed a terminally sick president who was magnanimous enough to admit his election was ‘defective’
Both relish the company of a cult of palace jesters massaging their ego .Military officers including Generals openly pledged loyalty to Babangida rather than to the nation. Some shamelessly told bemused Nigerians that they were ready to die for Babangida.  Within Babangida’s ‘army of anything is possible’, there were Babangida Boys’. There were even his “new breed politicians’ that breed nothing but corruption. Obadsanjo had his own court jesters who daily proclaimed, without him, there will be no Nigeria.
Above all, both are favourites of the West .They are of the same hue of African leaders the West installed and sustained in power to guarantee a life of leisure for their people. It was in the interest of the West that Babangida adopted IMF policy that only impoverished Nigerians. It was in the interest of the West that Obasanjo literarily carried cash to settle our unverified indebtedness to the Paris Club, a novel strategy they are yet to try in Italy, Spain and even America, the world’s greatest debtor. It is in the interest of the West that we in the name of globalization embark on liberalization that has made importation of fish, meat and grains cheaper instead of subsidizing local production.
The two devious leaders instead of throwing brickbats, or engaging in odious public bludgeoning of each other, should  apologise to Nigerians for the woes of our nation in the last forty years.

Bomb Explosion Rocks Army Base In Kaduna

A large explosion  today rocked a major army base in Kawo Kaduna. Eyewitnesses told Saharareporters that a suicide bomb attack took place at the 1st Mechanised Division.

Soldiers have since cordoned off the scene of the explosion barring civilians and reporters from getting close.
